This research, conduced during the 1987-88 crop year in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, Brasil, had the objective of evaluating the effects of seed treatment with cobalt and molybdenum based products on nitrogen fixation and other characteristics of soybeans (IAC-8). Experimental plots were planted in four areas with the seeds being treated immediately before planting. Leaf content analysis, made when the plants were in the vegetative (V-6) stage, verified that plants from seeds treated with cobalt and molybdenum based products had higher nitrogen content than those not treated. Both elements produced higher nitrogen levels when used in combination with an oil base innoculant. In relation to plant height and productivity results were similar to those from the leaf analysis: higher values were obtained in plants from seeds treated with the cobalt and molybdenum products plus innoculant. It must be admitted that since the experimental area had been planted to soybeans for several years, the importance of the innoculant may have been more as a medium of adherence for the fertilization products to the seeds, than as a source of Bradyrhizobium japonicum to the plants. It most also be admitted that there was a slinght tendency for the mature plants to lodge as nitrogen content, and plant height increased. Of course, since the cobalt and molybdenum were applied with the innoculant, lodging increased with the application of these elements. The height at which the plants put on the first beans was unaffected by the experimental MenosThis research, conduced during the 1987-88 crop year in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, Brasil, had the objective of evaluating the effects of seed treatment with cobalt and molybdenum based products on nitrogen fixation and other characteristics of soybeans (IAC-8).
